It’s my first summer after finishing my undergrad, so my friends and I made plans to spend a week in Florida. I couldn’t wait to feel the sand between my toes, ocean breeze in my hair, and my skin kissed by the sun! I’ve been waiting for this moment the whole semester.
The trip was set to begin at the start of Memorial Day weekend, and since we were driving, we left first thing Thursday morning so we could get there in the evening. After four years of assignments, exams, projects, and many all-nighter’s, we decided not to make any solid plans. I didn’t want to stress over an itinerary, and neither did they.
We arrived at our Airbnb around 6 pm on Thursday and couldn’t wait to let loose, so we forgot to unpack our clothes. All we did was load our luggage into the apartment we rented, which was gorgeous! It was a beachside view apartment with a freshly renovated kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms. It was like walking into a dream apartment. Me and my two best friends are spending the week in sunny Florida.
We grabbed some food on our way to the bars. Since our apartment was near the world-famous beach bar Flora-Bama from the MTV show, Floribama Shore, we decided to check it out.
I couldn’t believe how huge the place was on the inside. We walked around for a while to get a feel for the layout, but it was difficult to remember where everything was located. My friend Jaymie wanted to check out one section of the place in particular. I don’t know its name, but I will never forget seeing the many cloths lines of bras hanging from the ceiling. That was the most hosier thing I have ever seen in my entire life!
There was an excellent live band, except they were playing country music, which I despise. I was browsing the crowd, trying to get a feel for the room when I saw him.
Our eyes locked immediately. His gorgeous, deep brown eyes were so captivating. He smiled at me, and my heart sank. I couldn’t believe a man as beautiful as him would be looking at me until Jaymie shook me.
“Dude! Ness! What the fuck is wrong with you? Did you see a ghost or something?” she asked. I must’ve been staring for a while because I felt myself snap out of it.
“Huh? What? Oh, no, I saw him.” As I pointed, Jaymie and our other friend, Ella, followed my finger, and their eyes locked on just as mine did.
“Holy fucking shit, that man is a god,” Ella blurted out.
“Right?! Like, who chiseled him from marble?!” Jaymie agreed.
“I’m gonna talk to him.”
“What?! Ness, are you insane!? He’s like, 40!” Jaymie exclaimed. As if I would ever turn down an older man.
“So what if he could be 20 years my senior, he’s fucking hot, and I’m on vacation. I’m allowed to have as much fun as I want. I dare you to stop me.” They both just looked at me with jaws wide open as I turned around and walked straight up to him.
“Hi, my name is Vanessa. Friends call me Ness. What’s yours?”
“Bryan,” he said as he reached out to shake my hand.
“Nice to meet you, Bryan. So, are you here for business or pleasure?”
“Haha, pleasure mostly, but I live here as well. Just like to come to this bar to see what everyone’s up to on the weekends. How about you and your friends, business or pleasure?”
“Most definitely pleasure. Fresh out of college. The three of us are here for the week to let loose before we have to enter the adult world. Would you care to join us?” I gave him puppy dog eyes and pout as he contemplated the offer. It didn’t take much to shake in agreement, smile, and walk back with me.
Bryan and I spent most of the night talking. I completely forgot my friends were there until Jaymie kicked me from under a table we found.
“Yo, lovebirds, wanna join Ella and me on the beach? I’ve got some weed!!”
“Oh, fuck yeah!” Bryan exclaimed. Glad he’s down to party!
“Wonderful. I hope you can hang with us kids, you old man. This shit is potent as fuck!” Ella chimed in.
“Oh, sweet children, don’t you know I grew up with hippies?”
Man after my own heart.
Flora-Bama had an outside area near the ocean. By the time we got out there, the music had mostly died down, and there were only a couple of other groups on the beach. It was nice to have the beach to ourselves while we enjoyed some mostly legal drugs.
I knew it was a bad idea for me to smoke after drinking, but at that point, I didn’t care. We were all having a blast, and I needed just to relax. I must’ve gotten way too high because the last thing I remember was laughing at Bryan for falling in the ocean, to which he ran at me, gave me a wet hug and an even wetter kiss.
That kiss…
The next thing I remembered, all four of us were in the living room of our apartment. I was on top of Bryan making out with him, while Jaymie and Ella were next to us making out. Jaymie decided we should make things interesting and decided we’d all do it together. It was fun at first until Bryan started getting a little rough.
I got up to use the bathroom, and when I came back, Ella and Jaymie were punching and hitting him. I saw him get ready to hit back, but I grabbed a paperweight and threw it at his head. He fell instantly.
“Nice throw, Ness!” Ella shouted.
“Yeah, good shot! Pitching came in handy after all!” Jaymie went to check on Bryan, but he was out cold.
“Is he…dead?” Ella asked.
“Uh, lemme check.” Jaymie looked to see if his chest was rising and falling but shook her head. Then she checked his pulse and nothing.
“Holy fuck, what did I do?”
“Shit shit shit shit SHIT!! FUCK! Ok, don’t panic. This is not the time to panic. It’s fine; it was self-defense! No harm, right?!” Ella was pacing. I don’t know why I’m the one who killed the fucker.
“Ella, shut up. Calm the fuck down. Listen, this is what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna pick him up, drag him to the ocean, and dump him. Period. End of discussion.” Jaymie was so authoritative and direct. I don’t know how she was staying so calm.
“Are you insane!? What if they find his body?!”
“What if they do? By the time they find his body, they’ll see he was hit in the head and dumped in the ocean. The water will wash away all evidence of us, plus, we’re not from here. Listen, we just finished college. I am not about to start my adult life in PRISON because some fuck tard was getting too aggressive during sex. Ain’t happening.
Ness, Ella, look at me and listen. You two grab his arms, I’ll grab his legs and let’s get him the fuck out of here.”
Jaymie was right. This guy was nice at first, but he was being a creep and was getting aggressive. I was defending my friends; that’s it. I shook Ella to snap her out of the shock, and we did as Jaymie said.
It was easier to carry him with three of us, but he was still heavy. We had to walk deeper into the ocean so his body would float away. Jaymie grabbed some rocks near the beach and put them in a bag to tie to his ankle.
We watched his body drift away with the waves before returning to the apartment to clean off. Even after we all showered and cleaned up the apartment, Ella couldn’t stop freaking out.
“Ella! Seriously! Pull yourself together. Look, our trip just started. I’m not about to let this ruin our whole vacation. Let’s agree to never, EVER, speak of this again. We’re the only ones who know what happened. Keep your mouth shut, and let’s enjoy this fucking gorgeous state.”
“Jaymie’s right, Ella. Why don’t you come with me to the living room and meditate, does that sound good? It’ll help us clear our minds.”
Ella agreed to join me, and we sat with our legs crossed in the living room. Jaymie said she was tired and went to bed.
During our mediation, all I could think about was Bryan’s body on our floor. We cleaned up the bit of blood on the floor with some bleach, but I could still see the spot in my mind. I didn’t want Jaymie or Ella to think I was weird, but when I grabbed that paperweight, I had every intention of killing him.
There was a voice in my head that told me it was the only way to save them, and another voice that said it was the only way to free me.
I didn’t understand what it meant until after the weight left my hand. Time had seemed to slow down, almost to a complete halt. I could see the weight flying through the air in a straight line to his head. It was like watching one of my pitches during softball. I could see every detail of the blue weight that had swirls of white and black. It rotated in the air so I could see the flat part that allowed it to sit neatly on the table.
My target was the side of his head at the same level as his eye. I’ve been told that’s a weak spot that can cause some serious damage. My pitch must’ve been hard enough to kill him nearly instantly.
As I watched his body fall to the ground, a rush went through my own. A rush I had never felt before. It made me feel amazing, even better than an orgasm. I could feel a smile creeping in, but I held it back for the sake of my friends.
I had to fake being freaked out. I didn’t want them to think I enjoyed it, but it felt amazing – the power I had over him. He never saw it coming!
I heard Ella start to shuffle and opened my eyes.
“Feel better?” I asked.
“Yeah, a bit. I’m mostly tired now. I’m gonna go to bed.”
“Ella, we can’t speak of this to anyone. It never happened, alright?”
“Yeah. Fine. Night.” As she walked away, I remained seated for a moment. My mind was racing, and my heart was pounding. The rush from the activities this evening was lingering, but I could feel it slipping away.
One thing was for sure, I will never speak of tonight to anyone, ever. But I want to feel that rush again. I need to feel that rush again.
It’s a good thing we’ll be here for a week.
